Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, yet more than 700 people die from extreme heat every year in the United States. As temperatures continue to remain high this summer, it is important to stay safe in the heat. Below are a few helpful tips to keep in mind:
- Limit outdoor activities
- Drink plenty of water
- Wear light clothing
- Wear sunscreen
- Work outdoors early or very late in the day
Older adults have higher risks while being out in the heat and humidity–which can lead to heat-related illness. Headache, confusion, dizziness, or nausea could be a sign of a heat-related illness.
To keep heat-related illnesses from becoming a dangerous heat stroke, remember to:
- Get out of the sun and into a cool, ideally air-conditioned place
- Drink fluids but avoid alcohol and caffeine
- Shower, bathe, or sponge off with cool water
- Lie down and rest
